“One of the most amazing earmarks of religious living is that dynamic and sublime peace, that peace which passes all human understanding, that cosmic poise which betokens the absence of all doubt and turmoil. Such levels of spiritual stability are immune to disappointment. Such religionists are like the Apostle Paul, who said: “I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else, shall be able to separate us from the love of God.” The Urantia Book, 1101:1; The Bible - Romans 8:38

"Dear children! Also today I call you to pray, pray, pray. Only in prayer will you be near to me and my Son and you will see how short this life is. In your heart a desire for Heaven will be born. Joy will begin to rule in your heart and prayer will begin to flow like a river. In your words there will only be thanksgiving to God for having created you and the desire for holiness will become a reality for you. Thank you for having responded to my call."

“...we find that the chance that any (one) man might have lived down to the present time and fulfilled all eight prophecies is 1 in 10 to the 17th power. That would be 1 in 100,000,000,000,000,000."More Than A Carpenter, by Josh McDowell, proving that Jesus' fulfilled prophecy was not coincidental.

Get swept away, knocked off your feet, rendered speechless (but smiley) by righteous happiness. What is righteous happiness? A sense of your mission; your responsibility to God and to your fellow man; and, of course, vigorous, natural health! The Lord of the Universe intended no less for each of us.

Find out what you love to do, and do it, in the service of others, while maintaining a healthy lifestyle. It's better than winning “Lotto”! The effect will be a richness that brings true abundance: childlike wonder, a sense of connectedness, and appreciation! What more could one want?

The word “happy”, as used here, stands for Health, Abundance, Plain (but joyful) Living, Play and Youthfulness.

A little further down, I'll break each aspect down for you.

You get happy, and all that's inherent in the word, by turning your life over to God, and by taking exquisite care of yourself.

If you had a little child, like you, wouldn't you bend over backwards to protect and nurture that child? You owe yourself no less.

Here's how you DON'T get happy:

Your medicine cabinet is missing Xanax.”

Valium can make you feel more comfortable and less anxious.”

Too lazy to drive to the doctors? We can help.”

Just READING these drug ads (sent around in e-mails a while back) threatens to increase the reader's anxiety level.

DRUG SPAM

These legal psychotropes, in addition to causing horrible side effects, have shown themselves to be nowhere as powerful as an ages-old healthy lifestyle which includes eating natural foods, taking herbs or homeopathic remedies when sick, supplementing with vitamins and minerals, and plain old-fashioned taking-care-of-yourself.

CHOOSE THE FREEDOM OF JOY!

How, I often wonder, do the people who take drugs, who overeat, who constantly stifle their true feelings by any addiction do so without feeling an overwhelming sadness for the optimal selves they will never be?

Won't they have regrets, when they bid their earthly adventure adios?

If you'd like to give being you a try, go natural. Choose a God-knowing, healthy life. If you know it's right, do it. If you know it's not—don't! And if the difference between the two confuses you, take heart.  You have help!  Read on, from The Urantia Book.

"Having started out on the way of life everlasting, having accepted the assignment and received your orders to advance, do not fear the dangers of human forgetfulness and mortal inconstancy, do not be troubled with doubts of failure or by perplexing confusion, do not falter and question your status and standing, for in every dark hour, at every crossroad in the forward struggle, the Spirit of Truth will always speak, saying, 'This is the way.' " (The Spirit In Man)

I GIVE THANKS FOR THE BREATH

IN MY LUNGS.”

A local Christian radio station ran a filler which told the true story of a frail 90-year old nursing home resident.  She sat in a wheelchair, and was nearly blind. She had to be moved from her old residence, and  when she was wheeled to the doorway of her new room, she clapped her hands and said: “I love it!”

But I haven't described it to you!” the attendant said.

Happiness is something you decide ahead of time,” answered the little lady. “Whether or not I like something doesn't depend on how it is arranged; it depends on how I arrange my thinking.”

The wise woman continued. “You see, every morning, I have a decision to make. I can feel sad that my body isn't as strong as it used to be, or I can thank God for the breath in my lungs and the gift of another day.”

When you get to feeling good about yourself every day will be a wonder, and you'll be eager to find your mission. We all have one. And I'll tell you a secret: it involves helping others, to some extent.

How do I know? Revelation—and our natural quest to be of service, and to know God---summons us to help others.

Man/woman rises to his/her highest level when connecting universally.

Connecting expands our consciousness and fulfills our destiny.

And reaching out certainly lessens our appetite for artificial stimulants that anesthetize, and leave us feeling empty.

BE THE SPOKE OF A WHEEL!

Albert Einstein said: “A human being is part of a whole, called by us the Universe, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself...as something separated from the rest.

This delusion is a kind of prison for us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening the circles of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty.”

So now you know a new diet trick: be of service. (We're assuming you're of service to yourself, first and foremost.)

Guaranteed to help you lose weight. (And put a smile on your face!)

And don't be quick to charge money to help people. Meeting bare-bones expenses is one thing, but, time and again, I come across what seems to be a worthy association, until we get to the price tag. Even in today's inflated economy, asking for $75 for a telephone session to help those at the end of their rope is probably not what Jesus had in mind when he commissioned us to help others.

USE EXERCISE TO LIGHTEN YOUR LOAD!

Exercise

WHEN FOOD IS A DRUG

Be a friend to yourself (and to those who stand to benefit from having you here). Stop sabotaging your body’s natural rhythms, feelings and moods.

Many people don't do that. They use food, as well as actual drugs, to stifle emotions.

Do you do that? Are you embarrassed when you unload the contents of your shopping cart at the supermarket?

Turn that embarrassment around. Use the same energy, the same effort, the same mental faculty that made the decision to buy chips and soda and cold cuts and buy what makes your body, mind and soul feel good.

(And then just let yourself feel.)

You'll be just as full, eating stuff that's good for you.

And it'll taste just as good. When you are hungry,  food in its natural form--we're not talking white, processed, or bleached food, here—that is seasoned slightly with herbs, tastes like ambrosia. Your taste buds have forgotten, haven't they?

We all know that the allopathic paradigm is shifting, and that holistic healing--where the individual is involved in the healing process, and there's more of a mind-body connection--is the new industry boom.

Let's give it a chance in our own lives!

Youthfulness

We’ve forgotten how to commune with our bodies… and we need to remember.” - Supanova (holistic youth “edutainer“).

For a refreshing alternative to the youthful status quo, give this health warrior a listen:

I caught Supanova's holistic health rap on Global Medicine Review (99.5 FM), a radio program that features health resources you are NOT going to hear many other places.

This brother's hyper kinetic brand of natural energy and passion had the MD/host interviewing him gasping for breath. “I can still feel the fire!” Dr. Kamau Kokayi said, after a brief station break.

All of 26 years old, Supanova aims, with his music and upcoming movie (read about it on www.supanovaslom.com) to help keep kids from gangs, and from junk food like processed sugar.

Sugar is one molecule away from crack cocaine,” Supanova says. “They heat sugar, like crack cocaine. It prepares our bodies to become junkies.” Preaching holistic wellness for a Hip Hop culture, his message includes staying smoke-free

More Than A Carpenter, by Josh McDowell (Living Books/Tyndale House Publishers)

Josh McDowell, a university professor, thought Christians were "out of their minds".

That was before he did his research.  And before he asked Jesus to come into his heart.

"Jesus is in the business of changing lives," he says, in More Than A Carpenter.  McDowell also writes:

"Jesus Christ really was God in Human flesh."

McDowell recounts how even the Roman Centurion standing underneath the cross became a believer when he heard:  "Father, it is finished.  Into your hands, I commend my spirit."

Talking With Angels, by Gitta Mallasz.

Unadulterated heavenly guidance—no holds barred.

Your Body

HEALTH AT ANY AGE!

The human body is made of trillions of cells that, from infancy to old age, “know” to work together, and are constantly bailing us out of trouble. These faithful little soldiers run on good food and water and proper exercise and hygiene. And energy. Don’t forget energy. It’s the most powerful, precious thing you have. It’s the real you.

Energy. Life force. It’s what we have a responsibility to protect, and “grow”... with integrity and intent; with compassion and love.

Applied Kinesiology (how
muscles interconnect)

Speaking of how inter-connected our bodies are, sometimes our muscles' primary spasms originate in other groups of muscles. This is the theory behind Applied Kinesiology, which aims to pinpoint exactly what the body needs. Its advocates claim it announces whether the thymus, spleen, lymph, and other parts of the body are working, by testing different reflex points, and the neurological system.

Signs of adrenal weakness include: craving salt, and sweets. Apparently, this can lead to bronchitis.

In “Kinesiological Perspective”, by Richard Duree, “[Dr. George] Goodheart (originator) says that it is not always primary muscle spasm that causes structural imbalances, but homo lateral, opposing and synergistic muscle weakness, which creates the appearance of primary muscle spasm and the corresponding changes in joint alignment.”

In other words, when one part of our body hurts, we sometimes DO need to look further.

MORE PROOF THAT THE BODY IS INTER-RELATED:

Did you know you can massage the area between the big toe and second toe to get rid of the ache in your neck?

I was amazed and relieved--but not astounded--to learn, also, that massaging ones calves and heels completely eliminates heel spurs!

And whenever I have a sharp pain in any body tissue, it means blockage, according to Shiatsu practitioners. The “medicine” that is recommended is that the area needs to be massaged.

Now, if you massage yourself under the knee and downwards on the leg, you are reaching the centers that correlate to the spleen. (The spleen is located near the stomach, on the left side. It contains white blood cells, which release infection-dousing antibodies into the bloodstream.)

A point below the right rib correlates to the liver. This, and many other “afflictions” can be “fixed” by working on the foot!

Prone to one-sided migraines? The part of the body that pertains to headache is the tender spot under the rib. (Ask a Shiatsu specialist to demonstrate.)

THE BODY IS AN INSTRUMENT!

Make it a tuned one, so you can play the beautiful symphony that living your live can be.

It's also got all the natural “pharmaceuticals” it needs.

Your body is a wonderful pharmacy”, Deepak Chopra, M.D.

BIOENERGY

Do you know that in body healing, the diagnostician can’t separate the tissue s/he is working on, from energy?

Gives new meaning to “we’re all connected”, doesn’t it?

When one part of our body hurts, it makes sense to investigate, to see how our history (cells have memories), lifestyle, and all the complex other body processes have contributed. Weakness just shows up in the part of our body that has the least protection, or that has been irritated the most.

Speaking about the unparalleled intrinsic makeup of the body, Dr. Gary Null, holistic health innovator, has said the following, on his long-running “Natural Living” Radio Show, on WBAI-FM: (For more on Gary Null,  "Sensei", below.)

(I'm paraphrasing:) “There's intelligence behind our different energies. For instance, who tells our eyes to blink nine times per minute, to keep our eyeball moist, to protect the lens? Who tells our body, when it needs protein, not to cannibalize it from the eyeball, say?”

The body is an incredible work of art. Think of Michaelangelo's Painting on the Sistine Chapel, of God's finger extending to Man's.

REFUSE TO HAVE A HEALTH CONDITION!

O.K., guys and gals, we're back to that drug Spam. Here's another one we’d like to boycott. It goes something like this:

Just because you have a health condition doesn’t mean you have to pay more for insurance at OUR agency.”

Why HAVE a “health condition”, to begin with? Why not accept that you can be as dynamically healthy and happy as you want!?

A lot of people are hiring life coaches. You know, those together folk who can bring Feng Shui into your home and office, clean out your closet, counsel you on your career choice, and create (one imagines) a feeling of general goodwill.

Well, let's look at this. What better mentor for your life is there, than YOU? In partnership with God, the Divine, your life force, you've got it all inside.

Some folks like to bring someone in to help dust them off and polish all their facets, but you can do it just by waking up to your own potential.

(For a metaphysical take on this, you might want to check out Eli Jaxon Bear and his life partner, Ganga Ji, on www.leela.org)

I’m telling you to engineer your own happiness.

With all the afore-mentioned ads for tranquilizers, guess lots of people are seeking to come down off whatever hype and static keeps them elevated and ungrounded.

There's never something so wrong that you HAVE to reach for your particular escape (and, incidentally, violence and depression and any ritual you are engaging in that makes you feel off-kilter, whether in the long-term or in the short-term, are escapes).

There is a better way. Yes, for YOU!

It involves getting down and dirty with your emotions. Don't be afraid. They're only feelings. They're not the sum and total of YOU.

When you get to the other side of those feelings, it will be like someone took a blindfold off you, or gave you a blast of oxygen when you were short of breath.

Acquaintance James Woodward, formerly with the Urantia Foundation, puts the process of self-discovery this way: “Invite yourself to a tea party. Keep the stuff that makes you smile.”

It's all stuff you know, innately. Yes, you do. Close your eyes and go inside.

Simplify, unplug, be still. Open your heart, love yourself. By extension, love others, and other sentient beings. (I include animals and plants in this category).

And treat even inanimate tools of your day-to-day endeavors with respect.

Remember, you are, basically, here to connect.  Here is one way of looking at love:

The Perennial Power of Love

Do you wonder why every religion on this planet espouses love as its main conduit for salvation? It seems like such a simple concept. “As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons.” This line is from the world-famous Desiderata, a poem that has struck a chord in millions.

An examination of Desiderata reveals that there is precious little dogma in this poem, and no judgment whatsoever. And—this is important—it acknowledges what we all know. That life is no vale of tears, but that it is, at times, difficult. However, the poem’s message does not seem to be one which encourages us to dwell on the negative aspects of the world.

To the contrary: a few lines down we read: “…the world is full of trickery. But let not this blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism.” But what, you may ask, does this have to do with love? Plenty! You see, you can’t love or absorb love until you acknowledge that there is good with the bad in everyone. When you can truly love people as they are and love them regardless of their flaws, that is what love is, really.

That is its power.

Further down, Desiderata warns: “Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is as perennial as the grass.” These are time-worn truths. As long as you are true to the personality that you, and only you, have developed into, the poem’s lines caution us, then will you be content. (After all, that is the missive of Desiderata. Its final message is that we are to strive to be happy.)

Our creator imbued us with a spark of love, and that love has blossomed with every good thing we have done…and with every person whom we have loved. When Jesus Christ visited us on this plane, the Urantia Book tells us he was “love saturated”. If you have ever loved someone—really loved, with all your heart and soul—taking the good with the bad, you have known its power.

You have also known that love can lead you to emotions far grander, to insights more advanced, and to deeds far more valiant, than you might otherwise have thought yourself capable of. The power of love, then, lies in your surrender to that which is most beautiful in life: to the ultimate, to the ideal, to the everlasting.

Remember, we are also here to serve.

But, first, get busy serving yourself.  (Be kind to yourself.  Forgive yourself...) Give yourself up to the Creator. Anoint yourself as deserving.

Pray for guidance (without being materialistic).

Worship. Give thanks that your prayers are heard.

In other words, you acknowledge the gift of life and free will that you've been given, and you decide you want and deserve something righteous.  You align your will with God's, and relax into the reality.

Studies have shown that saying something to ourselves makes it so (eventually).   Let that sink in for a minute. We’re pretty awesome, aren’t we?

It Sounds So Easy!

Can I have everything I ever wanted by being happy? It sounds so...easy.  (Keep in mind, here, that you may not know what's best for you, at this moment.  Go "inside" for help and guidance in going after what is spiritually sound and of long term benefit.)

It is easy. It's as simple as a God-conscious life devoid of unnecessary clutter and chitchat and rituals that have no meaning.

But you'll have to change!

Just as a spider builds a web thread by thread, until all the pieces of silk are connected, in one masterful web, you need to build yourself up, anew, piece by piece. And use as your psychic silk everything that is good and powerful.

All healing is self-healing; the body heals itself. We are not on a list of a plumber’s to-do projects! Someone can’t come along and wrench or tweak us into place! It takes total body, mind and spirit inter-”correction”.

This site honors and points to alternative methods. Go to Google and do a search on:

Train For Health!

Why is it so unpopular to to walk and run long distances; to lift and carry; to empower our God-given flesh, blood and sinew?

The Center for Disease Control's 1999-2000 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey indicates that 64% of Americans are obese.

What IS that loose mass most Americans are carrying around? It doesn't look like muscle and sinew and ligaments and bone and tendon to me!

Please don't relegate staying in shape to the bottom of your laundry list of Things To Do. There is no reason to, and you'll see results soon, if you put in a little time and effort.

It's a quality of life issue, folks. To put it bluntly, you are not truly alive if you are clogging your energy, your system and your ambitions by over-eating and by omitting exercise.

Would you deliberately handicap yourself before entering a race? Would you give your car water instead of fuel?

No, of course not.

But you are hindering yourself just as much if you don't care what you put in your mouth, and if you think that exercise is something you can take or leave.

It is also a form of self-sabotage when you turn to food or drugs because you are not centering yourself via prayer, and you're not de-stressing, and there is precious little quiet reflection in your life. You do NOT have to be “on the go” 24/7!

Intentional Living

Your body, mind and spirit beg you to not take them for granted. And God beckons you to remember from whence it all came.

Want to make everything real clear?  Live every little moment as if you were in front of our Almighty Father.

For, in truth, you are.

You'll be surprised at how intentional living turns your life around.

Exercise!

It's youth-generating, mood-enhancing, life affirming. It's the lynch pin that holds the fabric of your day-to-day life together.

CHOOSING ACTIVITY

Choosing an active lifestyle (biking, running, power walking, weight lifting, dancing frequently....any sustained sports activity that makes you sweat and breathe heavy) isn't always smooth going. .

But don't let a little mishap or discomfort put you off.

Similarly, don’t indulge in anxiety about “what might happen”, i.e., you might trip.

Change the old records playing in your head, the ones that go: “Don't run; you'll fall.”

Or: “Stop playing so hard, you'll be out of breath before you know it.” Sound familiar?

Whether you ever needed those records is debatable; you certainly don't need them now.

I've observed an interesting fact: the more injuries an athlete sustains, the more alert and focused and balanced and determined to STAY active (and injury-free) he or she seems to become.

So while I'm not encouraging you to be so fearless that you get careless, I AM asking you to not set yourself up for failure before you even take a step. Tell yourself that, if you fall, you'll be OK.

(You'll be just fine!)

NO EXCUSES!

You might feel out of breath, or sick to your stomach, or get side stitches, but these will pass…and you will have found the fountain of youth. Just take it slow. Go nice and easy. Get into a mellow mental groove.

Exercise produces that little hormone that everybody is so eager to get into their body: Human Growth Hormone.

Just remember to take antioxidants--A, C, E, Selenium, Co-enzyme Q-10--before and, most important, AFTER you exercise. (They're important at night, too, right before the body renews itself.)

Did you ever see how an apple “oxidizes” once you slice it? That's what's happening inside when you work out. Don't worry, it's natural. But help get rid of those effects by taking antioxidants.

And, no, we don't have all our necessary nutrients in our foods, and certainly not in our depleted soils, anymore. Even if we did, we are exposed to many harmful factors, and the need for supplementation is great.

Of course, since you're being a pal to your body, by exercising, you HAVE dropped the SAD (Standard American Diet) lifestyle, haven't you?

HEALTH

Here are the basics:

Go to your cabinet, right now. Tackle that first, then move on to your refrigerator. Get a box. Throw in everything that’s processed. You know, the white pasta, the white rice, anything with white sugar added. Add meat. Meat’s got hormones, pesticides, high protein, and you don’t need anything dead floating around in your digestive track for six hours, like meat does.

Throw in anything dairy-based. We don’t need another species’ milk. Dairy clogs us, causing sniffles, asthma and throat clearing. It brings up phlegm, the body’s natural reaction to it.

Put in the cold cuts, Soda (with its twelve tablespoons of sugar per glass), bacon, the chips, the bagels, the breads, any “phony food“; stuff with chemicals or preservatives.

Then, close up the box flaps, and either give it away (go to your local church’s Outreach Center), or throw it away.

If you feel bad about all the money you wasted, put a full-length mirror in your kitchen. That's where the “money you wasted” really went.

Go shopping. Buy fruits, vegetables, legumes, sprouted grains (no enriched white flour), veggie burgers, natural spices and condiments like mustard, olive oil, soy, nuts, seeds. Buy bran, dried fruits. Figs, dates. Anything off the tree, or off the vine.

If you eat eggs, go for the egg whites ONLY.

Go to the fish section. Buy salmon, haddock, cod. Any top-water fish. (No shellfish.) In the canned fish section, go for sardines and mackerel. (This way, you load up on your DEA, and healthy Omega fats.)

Now buy a juicer. You can order it on line.

(My rendition of my father.)

Go home. Wash all those fruits and vegetables. (Sun & Earth©, a totally natural detergent based on Orange Oil, works splendidly, or soak in apple cider vinegar and a smidgeon of Dr. Bonner's.)

Blot the produce with towels and place into separate plastic bags or Tupperware.

Drink fresh juice. Start with once a day; build up to several juices a day. Science is finding that flooding your body with phytonutrients, which only plants and fruits and vegetables have, repair your DNA, and do all-around good things, like make you feel full, and give you energy to burn.

Fresh juices are minus the sugar, and enter the bloodstream immediately. Also, you’d never eat as many fruits and vegetables as even the five that the Center for Disease Control recommends we consume.

The Lancet, and Scientific American, two highly respected peer-reviewed journals, both recommend less calories, and more fruits and vegetables, to prevent premature aging. The way it does this is by protecting the mitchochondria, the cell's little energy engines.

Exercise. Start out at half an hour; work up to one hour. Don’t miss one day. Get used to the burn, the routine. Run, power walk, bike, do calisthenics.

Do it rain or shine, sleet or snow, holiday or not.

Important: warm down for ten minutes following it. Each stretch should be done to a full count of 20.

(Gentle readers, I’m not a Doctor, so remember to see your Physician--or at least phone her/his office--for permission to get sweaty-physical. And if you’re on medication, don’t stop taking it. Chances are, however, if you’re on blood pressure or high-cholesterol drugs, your M.D. will stop them for you, once you’ve been on a healthful program like this one.)

Research alternative health sites for nutritional information that pushes the envelope. An excellent one is www.garynull.com.

Do your research. Go to the Library. Listen to health programs. It’s a few hours well spent.

Take supplements: Our depleted air and soil simply don’t give us the nutrients of our great-grandmothers' time.

Visit a health food store and buy a powerhouse of nutritional supplements. Important: the old one-a-days don’t do the job. It’s a drop in the ocean. I take A, B, Folic Acid, C, E, Selenium, Zinc, D, DHEA (the “Mother of all Hormones”), Calcium and Magnesium (these work synergistically), Co-Enzyme Q-10, and L-Carnitine (for fat mobilization).

I keep Colloidal Silver and Oil of Oregano around for when I get a scratchy throat, but I find that, if I stay true to this healthful way of life, I don’t get ill.

Drink Spring water (it has all the minerals, unlike distilled). Or use a water filtration system. A gallon a day.

Need inspiration? Pin a picture of Venus or Serena Williams or your favorite athlete pumping their arms up in victory after a successful match.

Tip: visualize YOU as thin, athletic, and powerful. Again, take it nice and easy, and TRY to breathe in evenly, through your nose. (It’s hard; I know, but it works.)

Add triumphant visuals. Think of yourself running alongside a magnificent horse...or a cheetah.

Concentrate on the trees to your left, and to your right; on how steadily they've been part of the otherwise changing landscape. These trees will gift you with stamina, if you absorb their story.

Now, get ready, get set...GET ACTIVE!

Lesser/Greater?

I believe that there walk on this planet those that have become wiser, opened their hearts, and developed inter-relational skills and energies, in a manner that mirrors a microcosm of Universal goodness and wisdom.

I believe, too, that the Universe intends for those who have mastered a realm of goodness, of worth, to teach the rest of us.

And, while we are on this planet, our worthy companions, animals, should be acknowledged. There is a theory among physicists that animals (some believe it might be elephants) are waiting in the wings to develop into the “next awakened” species.

ARE YOU LATINA/LATINO?

To my Hispanic sisters and brothers, we have come very far, reinas y compadres…but not far enough.

Our diet is the equivalent of Spanglish: one half American (the “fast food” part) and one half Latin (the digestible but fatty part). Latin “hearty” doesn’t mean “good for you!”

We can retain our love of dishes passed down from generation to generation, while striking a blow at diabetes, heart disease and the obesity that plagues the Latin community. Here's how:

Eat more complex carbohydrates! Eliminate the grease and fried foods. Load up on the beans and fresh fruits and vegetables. Substitute soy for meat.

Instead of frying, sautė lightly in olive oil.

Forget the dairy, amigos. It aggravates asthma, a bane of Latino life.

On A Vegetarian Lifestyle

A VEGETARIAN LIFESTYLE:

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: WE ARE HERBIVORES. CARNIVORES HAVE SHORT DIGESTIVE SYSTEMS AND THEREFORE ELIMINATE RIGHT AWAY WITHOUT THE BENEFIT OF FIBER. WE DON’T.

Don't be “carbotarians”, as SupaNova (see above) would say. Vegetarians, if they're going to do it right, have to eat to live. Dump the cheese, fried and processed foods and to for LIVE and LIFE.

(Quoted from The International Vegetarian Union)

George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950)
Writings and Quotes on Vegetarianism

On being asked why he was a vegetarian:

Oh, come! That boot is on the other leg. Why should you call me to account for eating decently? If I (supped) on the scorched corpses of animals, you might well ask me why I did that.” - The Vegetarian, 15 January 1898

While we ourselves are the living graves of murdered beasts, how can we expect any ideal conditions on this earth?” - unknown origin

Animals are my friends...and I don't eat my friends”. - unknown origin

Think of the fierce energy concentrated in an acorn! You bury it in the ground and it explodes into a giant oak! Bury a sheep and nothing happens but decay.” - unknown origin

"... It seems to me, looking at myself, that I am a remarkably superior person, when you compare me with other writers, journalists, and dramatists; and I am perfectly content to put this down to my abstinence from meat. That is the simple and modest ground on which we should base our non-meat diet. . . "

I was told that my diet was so poor that I could not repair the bones that were broken and operated on. So I have just had an Xradiograph taken; and lo! perfectly mended solid bone so beautifully white that I have left instructions that, if I die, a glove stretcher is to be made of me and sent to you as a souvenir.” - Letter to Mrs. Patrick Campbell

Archibald Henderson, author of a three-volume biography of Shaw, recorded an appropriate conversation with him in 1924, when Shaw was already sixty-eight; it appears in Table-Talks, a collection illustrating the outspoken and witty side of the prolific playwright:

Henderson: “So be a good fellow and tell me how you succeeded in remaining so youthful.”
Shaw: “I don't. I look my age; and I am my age. It is the other people who look older than they are.”

According to PETA, “A vegetarian diet is the healthiest and most humane choice for animals, people, and the planet.”

LETTING PEOPLE GO

De-stressing hint: it's not “bad” to let people go if they aren't learning any lessons around you and you're not learning any around them.

You'll realize you should do this if there's constant friction when you are with certain people, or conflict, or if they simply don't make you feel “up”. You may need to step away to get a clear perspective. Or you may need to move on.

It's not about you. Don't take it personally. It's the negative energy caused by your TWO personalities clashing. That particular personality conflict will occur again and again, 'though, until you've got it right, so try to learn from each negative encounter.

(The exception is when expending energy trying to fix a relationship wastes your time; when you might be helping so many more people, instead of squandering it on the negative energy of someone whose psychic soil is continually fallow.)

Meanwhile, make sure you have people in your life who are shouting your good qualities from the rooftops, and vice versa.

We all need to give and get support, big-time.

FOOD BASICS

Clean out your cupboard! I’m serious! Why store clumpy, gooey stuff like white rice and white bread that will not only NOT help your body to heal or prevent disease, but will HINDER it?

(Besides, brown rice or quinoa win the taste test, hands down. )

Throw out anything that is not/was never living food.

 Thumbnail Health Q & A:

1. What sort of hair dye can one use? A: Henna. Meanwhile, have you tried juicing, (and detoxing from “bad stuff”) to get serious about anti-aging?

2. How do I start running? A. Don't do the half-walking, half-running. Jump into it. Go as far as you can, nice and easy.

3. What's a bone spur? A: Bone spurs are accumulated calcium in the body that the body has leached do to (amazingly) an INSUFFICIENCY of calcium.

4. How can all those medicines be offered o the Internet without a physician's prescription?

I don't know. How CAN they? Does anyone know? E-mail me at:

5. My Chi is down. I think. What IS Chi? Life Force in China. It's Ki in Japan and Prana in India You need a break. Listen to your body. Massage would help.

Seal (Singer): “Everyone we know is beautiful.”

I started this web’s home page with a couple of samples of negative Spam.

Here’s the final example: “Would You Like To Know Everyone’s Secrets? No one will ever lie to you, again…” This was an ad for a service that provides “secret reports” on people.

WHY would anyone with a sense of “do unto others” want to waste their energy even THINKING of snooping?

You see, once we get a life--a happy, healthy one--we don’t have either the time or the inclination to waste on being around people that are not trustworthy.

IT'S NOT CONVENTIONAL TO BE HAPPY!

But...remember: blessings are yours for the counting.

A healthy body, spirit, mind and attitude are the foundation upon which unlimited appreciation of life is based.

It's not conventional to think that health and happiness can be yours, no matter the obstacles.

But your conventional way of life hasn’t necessarily made you happy or healthy.

Beings happy and healthy and counting our blessings is our birthright. Do you believe that? Really? Then go against the grain! Be unconventional.

Get busy on the road to well-being! You need commitment and discipline, but the rewards are unlimited energy and a virtually pain-free existence!

The mission of this web page is to help you towards that goal. We are not saying that our information is the only way; just another option for you to explore.

PLAIN LIVING

Get real simple. Give up idle time, and go for meaningful solitude and contemplation. Forgo gossip and chitchat.

Declutter. Get a larger box than the one you used to bundle up your unwanted foods, and purge your closets, your drawers, your storage rooms, your basement, your garage. Rent a dumpster. Call your local Big Brothers or Salvation Army or Vietnam Vets. They’ll pick up.

Include things you haven’t used for the past year. That’s four seasons; if you haven’t used it for the past twelve months, give it to someone who will appreciate it

The ancient Chinese art form, Feng Shui, is widely believed to invoke harmony as you go through your daily paces.  Feng Shui is all about placing things beautifully, in centered harmony.

Even if you don’t subscribe to the Eastern art of allowing air to flow around your environment, know this: beauty and organization go hand in hand.

Stop the TV and radio and commercial magazines and endeavors that eat up your precious moments. This includes idle activities like window shopping or gossip or reading about celebrities. EACH SECOND YOU SPEND THAT WAY IS PROCRASTINATION.

You’ll never get that second back. There are no do-overs.  (What you don't learn here, you'll learn in heaven!)

Each of us has a chance to be a star in our own show. But, remember: there are no dress rehearsals.

As we get older, we should keep in mind that as wide open as our vistas are to us, now that we know who we are, and what we want, there are that many fewer years for us to accomplish our life mission. Don’t be disheartened; just get busy!

Having discovered this new way of living, it’s only natural (and in keeping with our Happy philosophy) that we would want to share.

Participate in your healing! Stop "needing" to be sick. And stop complaining. Do your homework and apply what you find

Inspirational Quote: “To remedy a situation, master its opposite.” Gary Null, Ph.D

Get the "right attitude".

Know Your Power!

You know what heightens the senses? Just stopping.

Stop looking for something to put in your mouth; stop talking; stop moving; stop listening to the TV or radio.

Stop doing things that make you a mindless, passive participant.

Go ”inside.”  Seek the God-connected truth. Ask your indwelling spirit for gentle guidance.

When you're ready to go back outside, let the external world reach the margins of your awareness slowly, like tendrils at the outside of your consciousness. Don't make anything external permanent.

Don't let anything transitory trespass into your core.

Abundance

Before asking for anything else, stop and look around you. Do you have running water? Thank God. Literally. Do you have food in a refrigerator that works, because you have electricity? Thank God. Do you have a couple of bowel movements every day, preferably each time you eat? (That’ll happen when you treat yourself to fruits and veggies and fiber, and when you exercise daily, and drink lots of quality water.)

THANK GOD!

Now, if you have needs, there’s nothing wrong with asking your Abundance Angels to come front and center. Open your heart and listen as your spiritual advisors guide you towards any project that will benefit others, and aid you, financially.

You need to plug into the universal current of money. To do that, you have to have a plan.

Don’t just plod through your days, feeling victimized, and waiting for the heavens to open up and rain wining lotto tickets.

Are you passionate about doing what you do? Do you serve others? I repeat: DO YOU SERVE OTHERS? That’s the number one way to abundance.

By doing so, you exchange quality energy in this particular plane of space and time and you will find that your needs are met.

And don't worry; don't fret. Don't fear.

"For God hath not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind."

The Bible, 2 Timothy 1:7

"When you are tempted to doubt the sureness of your bread, consider the ravens; they sow not neither reap, they have no storehouses or barns, and yet the Father provides food for every one of them that seeks it. And of how much more value are you than many birds? Besides, all of your anxiety or fretting doubts can do nothing to supply your material needs. Which of you by anxiety can add a handbreadth to your stature or a day to your life? Since such matters are not in your hands, why do you give anxious thought to any of these problems?"  Jesus of Nazareth.  The Urantia Book

Want A Great Example of A Wonderful Human Being? Get With Jesus!  (Turn To Him...Your Life Will Take On New Meaning!)

Here's a little bit about Our Lord's Marvelous Ways, While He Was On Earth:

As Jesus Passed By”

Jesus spread good cheer everywhere he went. He was full of grace and truth. His associates never ceased to wonder at the gracious words that proceeded out of his mouth. You can cultivate gracefulness, but graciousness is the aroma of friendliness which emanates from a love-saturated soul.

Goodness always compels respect, but when it is devoid of grace, it often repels affection. Goodness is universally attractive only when it is gracious. Goodness is effective only when it is attractive.

Jesus really understood men; therefore could he manifest genuine sympathy and show sincere compassion. But he seldom indulged in pity. While his compassion was boundless, his sympathy was practical, personal, and constructive. Never did his familiarity with suffering breed indifference, and he was able to minister to distressed souls without increasing their self-pity.

Jesus could help men so much because he loved them so sincerely. He truly loved each man, each woman, and each child. He could be such a true friend because of his remarkable insight—he knew so fully what was in the heart and in the mind of man. He was an interested and keen observer. He as an expert in the comprehension of human need, clever in detecting human longings.

Jesus was never in a hurry. He had time to comfort his fellow men “as he passed by".  And he always made his friends feel at ease. He was a charming listener. He never engaged in the meddlesome probing of the souls of his associates.

**********

What else will get you to the core of the real you? Savoring what's around you as if it were your last day, your last moment, your last intake of breath

Realizing that the day's light NOW, is the brightest you've ever seen, and the sounds you are hearing NOW are the sweetest you've ever heard. Likewise, you've never breathed in air so fresh and clean.

The greatest artificial high will never equal the ecstasy of knowing yourself; and of seeing and feeling and tasting and hearing all of life with gusto.

Turn your face to the sun like a flower; carry the sun around with you, so that it is yours to bask in, whenever you want.

Body Wonder

Isn’t it amazing that we just ARE? Trillions of cells cooperating in the greatest “project” ever: humanity.

Your body is resilient, so you may not notice how the detrimental things that you do affect that wonderful synergy.

But you don't want to wait until you're sick to start doing good for the temple that houses your soul.

DOING GOOD FOR YOUR BODY

First, get rid of all the junk. That includes white bread, white pasta, anything “fake”. Read the labels. Did “enriched, bleached” come from the earth? No. So it shouldn't go into you.

Throw cheese out, while you’re at it. Yes, you heard me. Cheese. Fromage, queso. Why? It’s dairy. Dairy is bad for humans. Cow's milk and its by-products clog the arteries and the nasal passages and causes secretions to come out of several cavities. For more information, see www.gentlebirth.org/nwnm.org/Got_Milk_Too_Bad.htm

Go to the store and load up on fruits, veggies, grains, nuts, seeds. All the foods mentioned in The Bible. (It just so happens that people ate healthily in The Good Book.)

OPEN LETTER to a pal who was starting to feel “old”.

Dear Bob:

Time is just the space in between the things you do; it doesn't apply in every dimension.

We're hardwired to live to be 120.

Instead of thinking in terms of time, we might stop getting in our own way, which is what we do when we hinder the life process, which is naturally joyful and abundant.

Try doing the little things that show you care for yourself, first:

Give up coffee. Try Green Tea.

Go for Stevia—a natural sweetener made from grain (http://www.holisticmed.com/sweet/)--instead of sugar.

Don't smoke.

Stop all meat.

Detoxify. Weigh less. Get to the point that there's so little food in your system that you have a bowel movement as soon as you eat. Why use your intestines as a storage facility? Disease accumulates in fatty deposits.

Go up to five juices a day (slowly). Drink purified water. Take antioxidants (A, C, E, Selenium, Zinc) and Co-Enzyme Q-10; L-Carnisine; L-Carnitine; Glutamine; eat lots of garlic and onions.

Eat foods found in the Bible--dates, figs, nuts, olive oil.

Drink no alcohol. None. One 12 oz. glass of wine kills 100,000+ friendly little brain, heart and liver cells--comes right up and whacks 'em in the head with a shovel! While they were just standing there, minding YOUR business!

Exercise one hour (work up to it) a day and lift light weights. Daily.

Don't lie. Don't push something you don't believe in. Life is simpler, and lighter, when you're righteous.

Stress is something you've got to let go of, as much as possible (except when you're energized by positive forces.)

Pray. Worship. Meditate.

Watch a squirrel.

Let things go. Forgive yourself. Journal every day. Don't fraternize with people who don't honor you.

Should I add: "take a lover?" Well, do so if your heart tells you it's a permanent enhancement.
Promiscuity is all about being on the wrong path. Make certain it's a fairly uncluttered and joyful ritual. It shouldn't be a “drama”.

And makes sure your liaison is responsible, and loving.

About people who are always complaining, don't listen or give advice. Walk away if you think your energy is about to be dissipated.

It' s OK if others mistake it for aloofness.... we should only concern ourselves with our Father in Heaven thinks.

Always do work that matters, and do what you love. Volunteer. Help people every chance you get.

Do nothing, sometimes.

Explore nature.

By all rights, we should be breathless with appreciation at the exquisite perfection of a rose.

Be mindful of your potential, as a child of God.

Peace and blessings,
Eva

Play (How To Do It)

Once you've accomplished the tasks you've set for yourself, relaxation is a key component to a balanced, joyful life. (And when you feel balanced, you're more able to give!)

You know how serenely primed for a relaxing holiday you are when you’ve dotted all the i’s and crossed all the t’s in your work endeavors?

That's when you can play like a child, with glee.

Go outside and chase a bunny or squirrel. Ride a bike for the wheeee! of it. Join your son or daughter or niece or nephew or grandchild in whatever game they're playing.

Dance to your favorite music, as long as the lyrics are positive. (This is a lifestyle change we’re undergoing. We’ll do well to eschew anything debilitating.)

Grab a pastel crayon and a sketch pad, if you’re so inclined, and draw a perfect red rose in its full bloom. Cut your drawing out and put it in front of you, near your computer where you work.

Or place the rose drawing on your refrigerator. A quick glance at it will remind you of all of life’s facets, when you’re tempted to eat when you‘re not hungry.

Anytime you play, you de-stress. De-stressing helps you in ways I can’t even begin to list. Suffice it to say that it’s the second most important part of this equation (after becoming God-conscious). If you can get the de-stressing part down, the rest will follow.

Youthfulness

Think young. If you're 40, you’re only in the first one-third of your life.

(Remember, experts say we are hard-wired to live to be 120. Hey, there’s a turtle somewhere that Darwin brought over that’s 120, and not a cataract or tumor on him! Maybe we should be eating what he's eating!).

When someone asks you how old you are, ladies and gents, say: In biological or chronological age? There’s a difference, you know. And the purpose of this protocol is to make you AT LEAST a good ten years younger than you are, chronologically.

Walk with a spring to your step. Stay limber by walking or biking everywhere. Dress in natural fibers that let your skin move and sweat and BREATHE. Never say “I’m too old to wear that, do that, sing that, dance that, love that…”.

Do facial exercises. Stick your tongue out as far as it will go. Now try to touch your nose with it. Smooth your forehead muscles by placing your fingers over them. Smile without moving a facial muscle.

Get books on facial exercises at the library or at your local Barnes & Noble. Or check the Internet.

Hang out with kids, teens, single moms, people in their 20’s. Share with them your achievements, prestige and well-earned peace. Build your relationship skills.

Remember what Jesus said: we are one brotherhood, one sisterhood, one people. Spread the love (but protect yourself—don't become an enabler, nor a victim).

Spirituality

There is a higher power. We who believe just KNOW this. For those who need reassurance: Science believes it. Most famous scientists have gone on record about their faith.  Their contemplation of cosmic matters put Galileo, Copernicus, Bacon, Keppler, Descartes and Newton in close touch with truth.

Those who have “died and come back” swear to it.

In fact, those with NDE--near-death experiences--aren’t even afraid of death, anymore.

And we all know that the higher power is God, who is pure love.

We feel the power, the energy shift, when we open our hearts to the largesses of the Creator of the Universe.

All religions, mystics, and Jesus, the greatest hero to ever walk the earth, proclaimed love as the way. (“I am the Way, the Truth and The Life,” Jesus said, and, indeed, his teachings stressed love, Divine Father worship, and brotherhood.)

So pray, y’all. Anytime you really want something righteous, God is just waiting to hear from you; as a nursing mother hearkens to her crying infant, so shall he turn his face to you.

The Bible,  Romans 8:28 "And we know that all things work together to them that love God, to them who are called according to his purpose."

This poem by Rumi uses that beautiful analogy to explore God's compassion:

A dragon was pulling a bear into its terrible mouth.

A courageous man went and rescued the bear.
There are such helpers in the world, who rush to save
anyone who cries out. Like Mercy itself,
they run toward the screaming.

And they can't be bought off.
If you were to ask one of those, "Why did you come so quickly?" He or she would say, "Because I heard your helplessness."

Where lowland is, that's where water goes. All medicine wants
is pain to cure.

And don't just ask for one mercy.
Let them flood in. Let the sky open under your feet.
Take the cotton out of your ears, the cotton
of consolations, so you can hear the sphere-music.

Give your weakness
to One Who Helps.

Crying out loud and weeping are great resources.
A nursing mother, all she does
is wait to hear her child.

Just a little beginning-whimper,
and she's there.

God created the child, that is, your wanting,
so that it might cry out, so that milk might come.

Cry out! Don't be stolid and silent
with your pain. Lament! And let the milk
of Loving flow into you.

The hard rain and wind
are ways the cloud has
to take care of us.

Be patient.
Respond to every call
that excites your spirit.

Ignore those that make you fearful
and sad, that degrade you
back toward disease and death.
— Jelaluddin Rumi

Dr. Eric Pearl, who wrote “The Reconnection”, claims we can all plug into our healing power.

In the book, he writes of his mother's Near Death Experience, during which she learns the answer to many seemingly unanswerable questions, such as- why the grass is green, and the sky blue.

Though many of the lessons escape her once she returns to earth, there are three she retains:

Never judge anyone by their physical aspect; we are here to serve; and The Divine Father is never to be blamed for our misfortunes.

And, yes, she was in the presence of all-encompassing love, while “over there”.

The same love is with us, “over here”.  (We carry a fragment of God within us:  the indwelling Spirit.)

ANIMAL COMPANIONS

Please value your precious pet's love. Domesticated animal companions, especially, LIVE for your attention. God put them here to accompany us. Please show your appreciation.

Even on his/her deathbed, your pet's thoughts will be of playing with you, one final time.

Don't wait until your beloved pet can barely lift his or her furry little head before you return such affection.

Q&A

Runner's Knees” and more

Dear Happy Health Lady:

I used to run, but now settle on the Elliptical exerciser because of these old joints. I miss the running. What to do?

Answer: Start by detoxifying. Acclimate your body to good stuff--live foods, chlorophyll-enriched, plant-based foods, lots of good water, the essential oils, and antioxidants--to get rid of the free radicals you form when you exercise.  Also, take and cold-water fish.  Remove phlegm-producing foods, like anything oily, greasy or difficult to digest from your diet.

Now add garlic, which has sulfur: lots of it. It’s the stuff that is found in MSM, or Methylsulfonylmethane, which is anti-inflammatory, anti-pain and anti-aging.

Make sure you take calcium and magnesium (they balance each other out). Calcium chloride (not carbonate)- 1,000 mgs. - and about half of that, of magnesium. I'd look into Glucosamine, too.   Do your research! There are info-packed web sites that recommend you take more magnesium.

Know that NOT doing exercise will diminish your bones and cartilages and joints A LOT FASTER. Don’t want the impact? Go running on turf tracks. STRETCH for about 5-7 minutes before and after! When stretching, hold each position to a count of 25.

Adopt a feather-light mental attitude when you run. Don’t plod mentally, and you’ll likely feel like you're floating when you’re jogging.

Dear Happy Health Lady:

I see joggers run by my house while I’m walking my dog and I'm tempted to get that runner's glow. I’d like to start, but I run out of breath after one block. How do I start running?

Answer: At first, when you aren't yet too “into the zone”, take your doggie with you. They're great company, and being around an animal levitates your spirit. That's important!

If you keep your spirit light, while running, your body will follow suit. Don't concentrate on your breathing.

Focus, instead, on how your body is moving. Act as if you're bouncing on a trampoline—but propel yourself forward.

Don't push it. Stop when it's not fun. (You'll have plenty of time to go for the burn, when you get to know your body, and its limits.)

Soon, you'll be huffing away, comfortably (yes, there is such a thing) for twenty minutes; then thirty; then forty-five, then one hour, and finally, on good days, an hour and fifteen minutes.

Hygiene As Obsession and "Neuro" Findings

Dear Happy Health Lady:

Is it true we can go too far in being hygienic?

Answer: What is too far? Are we talking scraping your skin off your bones? If you are obsessive about it, that is in another league entirely. You might want to look in to Dr. Jeffrey Schwartz' theory on how one can rewire the mind.

His book: “The Mind and the Brain: Neuroplasticity and the Power of Mental Force” tells of the ability of neurons to form new brain connections. The theory can be applied in obsessive disorders and in cases of Stroke.

But back to the validity of hygiene, nothing reinfects you faster than not washing your pillow cases and bed sheets every day when you're ill.

So just because you can't see 'em doesn't mean they're not there.

Dear Happy Health Lady:

How many meals are considered healthy for an adult?

Answer: Six teeny weeny ones, or every couple of hours. One in the a.m.-- a juice you put together in a juicer, with some protein powder sprinkled in; one around 8:30; one around 10:30; one around 12:30 (the big one); one around 3 and one at 5:30 or 6:00.

This assumes you are active! If you're not, I want a note from your Holistic Practitioner explaining why not!

My Mom is an extra-sensitive.  (That's sort of like an intuitive). She likens the body’s energy process to a house's fuel burner.

If you're not using the fuel, she says, don't shovel it in.

Give your body a chance! Don't burden it with food it doesn't need. By eating less, you're giving it a much-deserved respite.

Also you’ll see that the less you feed yourself, the more of a connection you’ll be able to make between what your body works well with, and what it simply doesn’t want.

How? Some people call it the elimination or rotation diet, which is often used to determine allergies. It’s true!

Get skimpy with what you put into your body and, after detoxing, you’ll see what gives you heaps of energy; what brings your energy down; what helps you have three, four bowel movements a day; alternately, what clogs you; what gives you sniffles (dairy!)... and on and on.

Supermarket Help

Dear Happy Health Lady:

What do I look for in the Supermarket?

Answer: O.K., here's what I subscribe to: Don’t buy: ANYTHING.

Only kidding!

But buy SELECTIVELY!

Buy: Buckwheat pasta, brown rice. Rice pasta. Tempeh. Tubers. Beans.

Buy fruits and veggies and live foods and Biblical food (figs, dates, nuts, seeds, olives). Cold water fish.

And don't forget the bottled water if you don't have access to filtered or otherwise purified water.

Nothing motivated me to work on this web site like seeing overweight women in my local supermarket scrutinizing the diet bars. “That’s not going to work!” I want to say.  (I fully realize people need to be ready to change their belief systems.)

Another thing I see a lot of is shoppers loading up on ice cream and diet coke.

There's nothing wrong with the taste of ice cream, but try tofutti, or Rice Dream, or make your own ice cream without the milk or cream!

As for the soda, it's plain bad.  There are claims that polio was toxicologial, and not microbial--and that the drinking of soda beverages contributed to the disease.

"Dr. (Benjamin P.) Sandler's researches showed specifically that the modern tendency to consume excessive amounts of cola and fountain drinks and frozen foods in hot weather, loaded with refined sugar, was responsible for the rise in polio cases. The phosphoric acid in soda absorbs the phosphorus and sulfates in the foods we eat before they metabolize. The nerves are thus deprived of the necessary phosphorus and sulfate, and certain nerve trunks cease to function. The victim loses the use of one of more limbs."
http://www.vaccinetruth.org/polio_vaccines.htm

Flu symptoms and colds--what can be done?

Dear Happy Health Lady:

Any advice on colds and flu?

Answer: Have herbs on hand for when you get a scratchy throat. Get it before it progresses to what MD’s call a “damp heat”. Spices are powerful antioxidants. Oil of oregano and colloidal silver work wonders.

All the data I've heard makes me anti-vaccine. If the immune system is already trying to fight off an antigen, and you give it a series of stressors (i.e., vaccine), it's not a good idea.

Also, the flu vaccines used today (like all vaccines) still contain mercury. Children, especially, shouldn’t take in more mercury, which is much more toxic than lead.

Lead toxicity level is one-fifth what it was 40 years ago because we are getting smarter about toxins like lead, but let’s not wait 40 years to get rid of mercury!

True, the body usually detoxes, but some bodies don’t do so as well as others.

Especially bad is the Flu Mist, which is a live vaccine, sprayed directly into the nasal membrane. What if the recipient sneezes?

Massive amounts of A, C, & E also do the trick. Try 100K a day of A, 2000 Units (400 per capsule) of E, 5K of C every hour (ascorbic acid, not Rose Hips) up until 45K first day, ½ second day minus a couple of spoons before you‘d get diarrhea

Keep count until loose bowels occur. Sounds like a lot but there is an enormous requirement for C in illness or in an operation. Buffered will help your body absorb it and not acidify your body. Or, you can buffer it yourself by taking a couple of Tums. (Buffering occurs by adding calcium and magnesium.)

Also, Echinacea and Aloe Vera builds the immune system and knocks out inflammation..

Here's an old folk remedy that works: Apple cider vinegar and water will rid body of ph-sensitive germs in the throat.

Vaccines

Vaccines let body trade acute illness for chronic illnesses, thereby reprogramming the body to respond non specifically to whatever else comes along.”

HEALING WHEN YOU ARE ILL - BRINGING IT ALL TOGETHER

Here’s one woman's story:

It's a breathtaking portrayal of how one woman's world went topsy turvy, only to get quite upright again, with Divine intervention, and a lot of gutsy self-determination.

One Person’s Journey from Breast Cancer to Wholeness.

It all started with a phone call from a friend, Susan. “Sharon,” she said. “I have just spoken to a man they call the Crystal Keeper and he asked me if I knew someone named, Sharon. I said I did, and he told me to tell you as soon as possible, that…” (This man was in Quartzite, Arizona, where I had never been. I was in Modesto, California. Susan was buying crystals and gemstones for her business from wholesalers in Tucson and Quartzite.)

“…if you don’t re-contract with the Universe to get your lessons from living instead of dying, and if your family and friends don’t re-contract with the Universe to get their lessons from your living instead of your dying, you will be riddled with cancer in 6 months”.

It hit me like a ton of crystals falling on my head and I was too stunned to think about how crazy it might be. But I knew that he was right and that although I knew I had a tumor in my left breast I was in denial and had been for several months as it got bigger and more painful by the minute.

[Something different] entered my life suddenly and shattered the limitations, blocks, and expectations I had of life up to that point and forever after. The journey began with a quantum leap from the matrix of all I considered real into the mystery tour called “holistic and metaphysical”.

It is truly a mystery and cannot be defined except by living it. And, I was not given the easy choice of whether to take the blue pill or the red pill and wake-up at another energy vibration or stay in the familiar matrix. I was suddenly separated from the illusions I had accepted from childhood as reality, by the choice to die to the “Dream” as I knew it, one way, or another. I could die as a result of metastasized breast cancer or I could choose a conscious awakening through a process of healing.

The conscious awakening which I chose, required that I sever my remaining connections to society and all the beliefs and goals that create acceptance and status in our society. I quit my high-paying job as an ICU nurse, pulled out my pension, unplugged from the insurance system and asked the Universe to bring me the tools, the knowledge and the people I would need to assist me in my healing process to wholeness and self-empowerment.

The surprise of a life-threatening illness not only strengthened my faith in something greater then myself, but it sparked a new awareness so profound yet completely obvious. This awareness was simply that we must find a way to heal ourselves in order to heal the Earth, or continue on a path of self-annihilation.

Since I could not heal anyone else but myself, I decided to start there and found that task to be grander then I had imagined. It required the clearing out of an entire inventory of physical, spiritual, mental, emotional and psychic toxins from many lifetimes including this one, to create room for the Divine. And that is, in my mind, the only way to graduate from Earth School 101.

The conscious choice to make this journey at this crucial time in my life was and is a gift from the Universe and the Divine, who is my partner and myself, and I would like to share it with you. I have no expectation that you will join me, I only give you a light to guide you and one piece of the puzzle that contains us all.

And in this sharing of light I hope you understand that you are being offered the same choices I had; to die one way or another and therefore to live. It is an opportunity to take responsibility for all our choices and like me, to awaken to the knowledge that we are the creators of our lives and none other.

By accepting responsibility and our mantle of power, we choose to live as no other human civilization has ever lived before, in a new energy and at a higher vibration energetically which is enlightenment.

We are given the opportunity to ascend in the flesh and take the earth and all living things with us, not to do it alone in a monastery with few distractions and in the company of others who support and mentor us.

And not to do it through spiritual discipline only, but through physical, mental, emotional and psychic discipline as well, in order to bring all of our selves, whole and in balance, to a higher evolved state of consciousness. It is an exciting journey and an adventure that challenged everything I am and have been and will be.

At this point in my life, I knew very little about metaphysics, alternative medicine or about sacred contracts. I had just begun to practice massage and look at other ways in which I could assist people in their healing without causing more pain and harm. I had no idea that a world of healing and unlimited possibilities existed outside the modern health care system, as I was an ICU nurse and dedicated to service through a busy, high tech. hospital. I had begun to sense something was very wrong with my life 2 months earlier and had gone to my MD with all the symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome, and he had given me permission to take a leave of absence from my job in the ICU.

I thought that the conflicts I was having with modern healing methods or allopathic medicine, were the main cause of my distress but they were just a symptom of a much greater call to follow my Sacred Contract. I had just heard of Carolyn Myss, Ph.D. at this time and went to see her Spiritual Alchemy presentation, in Oakland, in 1999.

There I learned of the new frontier in medicine: Energy Medicine. I got introduced to medical intuition, and to archetypes and Sacred Contracts. I discovered a woman who was powerful, alive with knowledge I wanted, and who enticed me with new beliefs and possibilities to explore.

But I did not know at that time how important the opening of this door in my consciousness would be, until I received the phone call which challenged me to take an active, conscious role in changing my contract and implementing my own healing process, and it was a matter of life or death.

I also did not know at the time, that the reason I was drawn to the work of Carolyn Myss, was because I would soon be using many of the steps to wholeness and living she recommends, to bring about a “Feng Shui-type” cleansing of my life as I knew it; a complete metamorphoses of my sense and understanding of self, life, the universe and cosmos and my relationship to it.

I was not told what caused my cancer by my MD, I was told that I needed to see a surgeon right away and that if I didn’t I would die within six months. After hearing about Carolyn’s (Carolyn Myss) life-work and meeting some local healers from the Holistic Healing Center, then in Modesto, I was able to look my doctor in the eye and with power and conviction tell him, “I grew this tumor and I will un-grow it”!

He got tears in his eyes for he truly was afraid for me, as he said to me, ”You know I am here for you if you need me. And if you do this, I will believe in God”! I told him that I appreciated his concern and compassion, and that I would hold him to his promise and I did. I lived and I healed myself from fast growing, aggressive, breast cancer without sacrificing parts of myself and being radiated and poisoned.

I did it using many of what I call “Higher Vibrational Healing” techniques, that treat what I believe is the cause of cancer and perhaps many other imbalances that plague our generation.

Carolyn Myss described the relationship between illness and our societal consciousness as being related, when she explained how polio came and went during the Great Depression in one of her books with Norm Shealy, MD.

(She also talks about the spirit or energy behind AIDS in detail). She left the impression in my mind that illnesses that are popular in different generations reflect the imbalances inherent in the time that they plague the population. I believe this whole-heartedly because I experienced one of the most devastating and feared imbalances of our day, Breast Cancer.

And I realized it reflected my own individual imbalances and the world’s at large, my lack of personal power and my disconnection from the Creator of All That Is, but most of all it addressed the toxic way in which I had lived in a world that is toxic.

I knew in my heart that I could transform my life from lead to gold.

Carolyn’s life’s work was one of many that the Universe brought to me to assist me in my healing, but it outlined for me the entire foundation of the energetics of my healing which then empowered me to do the physical, mental, and emotional work I needed to do and introduced me to medical intuition.

We become “whole” by addressing all areas that are life giving and enhancing because healing is a process, not a pill or a procedure.

The beliefs regarding the differences between “Holism” , or “becoming whole,” and Allopathic medicine or Modern Health Care as we know it, is the first belief-system which needed to be brought into my consciousness and changed as I took on the responsibility of healing from Breast Cancer.

The traditional way of thinking about healing in the modern world today is symptom oriented and disease based. It does not take the individual differences of a person into account, such as personal nutrition, environment, toxicity (exposures to stress toxins, emotional toxins, spiritual toxins, mental toxins and environmental toxins), relationships, life-times present and past, spiritual practice, traumas healed and unhealed, and wounds in spirit, soul, and body, like my journey to wholeness did.

What I did in a hospital setting to assist people in arriving to a state of health only gave them the illusion of health and not the reality of health. This is because of the lack of focus on personal responsibility for one’s health, and because of the motivation of modern health care, which is money- and symptom-disease orientation.

The Heart has been deleted from the modern institution and along with it the whole-person, and preventative and cause oriented medicine. (We see the person as a gall-bladder or a heart by-pass, or as an upper GI, not as a whole person with a life and history, so we treat only that.).

I also realize that, each person must accept this challenge for himself or herself, and that their healing journey will be theirs alone and not patterned after any other healing journey.

The message to “re-contract with the Universe” made it clear that I would have to consciously make a choice to heal myself and that up to that point much of my life had been unconscious and dependent.

After that, many tools were brought to me, many people, many new understandings of the way the Universe creates balance. I began to live in my integrity, use the tools and knowledge that were given to me. I began to cultivate my personal relationship with the Creator of All That Is, strengthen my faith, and to identify all the areas of my life that were being drained by giving away my power.

And they were many and all encompassing. I let go of that which did not serve healing and love, which included all fear-based belief systems, and relationships to all things living in my sphere or environment that were negative and draining. I transformed my life from lead into gold. I energetically swept out my life to allow a higher vibration to exist, healing the cancer, which vibrated at a lower vibration.

I thank Carolyn and her companions for being a profound influence in the awakening I experienced, which has resulted in my transformation today to living instead of dying. It has been five years since the phone call that introduced me to my creative powers through choice, and to the Creator of All That Is, in what I thought was “magic”.  I am creating Heaven in my life everyday, healed from breast cancer and joyful that I remained in this body.

La felicidad. ¿La capta? La deberia captar.

Vaya natural!

Salud A Cualquier Edad!

Somos asombrosos, no?

(www.myss.com or www.beliefnet.com).

“Magia” entro mi vida y rompio mis limitaciones...

Commentary: English-speaking readers will note that the English section is longer than the Spanish section. I have, perhaps chauvinistically, reasoned (and explained as such to the Spanish readers) that the majority of Spanish-speaking persons can read and understand English, although they may not be able to speak it. I've translated text in a way that gets to the kernel of the information, and points to further sources. It is my hope that what is read will be of service, and further the health, happiness and goodness of my fellow man.

Thanks to Richard, of www.geekontherun.net, the most accessible, win/win computer maven I know.  Without Richard's support, the Happy Healthy Bilingual web page would still be the wisp of a dream.

Thanks, especially and always, to my Mami, my muse. Daily, she inspires me by reminding me of the truly important things in life by deliberately putting on two different color socks.  "It doesn't bother me!  Does it bother you?" she asks anyone who points out the discrepancy. Mami is editor on all my bilingual tasks.

And to Popi, a great big thanks for taking care of us when we were growing up, and of Mami, now.

Why Vitamins, Antioxidants And Supplements Are As Important To Our Health As The Air We Breathe

by Eva R. Marienchild

Even as far back at 300 BC, Aristotle knew about nutrition:  "…what is nourished is the body which has … soul; …by which it is nourished, is nourishment (i.e. food)" (De Anima ii 4, 416b20-23).

The alternative or holistic health movement has, in the last twenty years, shed additional light on the issue, by defining WHAT is needed for relative good health.

"Good nutrition is the foundation of good health" according to that Rosetta Stone of Nutritional Health, "Prescription for Nutritional Healing", by Balch, M.D., and Balch, C.N.C.

But what constitute good nutrition?  Aside from the basics of water, carbohydrates (which category includes all-important Fiber), Protein and Fat, we also need what is known as "micronutrients".  Mainstream healthcare calls vitamins and minerals "micronutrients" because it is believed that relatively small amounts are needed.

But we need more than the US Food and Drug Administration would have us believe we do.

When reading the back of vitamin bottles, we should keep in mind that the recommended daily allowances, or  RDA amounts, are arrived at as the amount required to AVOIDING A DEFICIENCY of the particular nutrient.

And, just as the amounts TRULY needed for optimum health are anything but the minimalist amounts touted in standard "one-a-day" formulas, there are groups of people that require an additional up-stepping of nutrients.

Men and women who are active, under stress, the elderly, persons diagnosed as mentally or physically ill, smokers and drinkers, and those recovering from surgery, need extra doses of vitamins and minerals.  These persons are suffering from a "minus" deficiency, so a Homeopath, Naturopath or Nutritionist should be consulted as to the mega-doses they should be taking to replenish the severe loss of vitamins and minerals.  (Intravenous vitamin drips is one method of replenishing massive doses of supplements.)

Let’s take a "whole" person, or holistic sidestep, here, and say that exercise and the capacity to manage stress are just as important (maybe more so) than taking the proper nutrients--which is, after all, an extension of choosing a healthy lifestyle.  Eating foods that are neither processed nor "fake" is a big part of that lifestyle. You ARE what you eat.   Check out the ingredients on your food purchases:  if you don’t recognize them, chances are they don’t originate from the earth; weren’t consumed by our ancestors--who didn‘t suffer from the myriad diseases modern man and woman suffer from--and shouldn’t be consumed by us.

At the top of the list of foods that we should be eating are fruits and vegetables--eaten raw (with the exception of broccoli and cauliflower, which should be steamed for a minute or two)--and legumes and grains, lightly cooked.

WHERE TO START:: PHYTONUTRIENTS

Mainstream medicine has caught up with ahead-of-the-curve holistic paradigms.  The new Food Pyramid put out by the US Department of Health and Human Services recommends nine portions of fruits and vegetables a day.

Science has found that flooding the body with phytonutrients, or plant-based nutrients, is critical to good health.  If you examine the chemical makeup of any fruit or vegetable, the healthful ingredients will fill up pages and pages of single-space book type.  An important note:  these plant chemicals are not destroyed by cooking or processing.

There is evidence that eating your fruits and veggies and grains and legumes are bonafide wonder foods.  In alternative health leader Gary Null, Ph.D‘s "Ultimate Anti-Aging Program", the author reveals:  "I researched the foods high in phytochemicals  to balance the body‘s natural hormone levels.  … Earlier in life, many (research subjects) damaged their bodies by taking drug or drinking alcohol…"  Dr. Null’s all natural protocol--which includes supplements--reversed damage to these subjects.  Phytochemicals were given in juices, which increases their bioavailability.

As recently as 1999, The US Department of Agriculture‘s Agricultural Research Magazine  still pulled back from all-out recommending phytochemicals, due to the so-called "limited knowledge of phytonutrients." It did give fruits and vegetables a respectable pat on the back for its disease-fighting tendencies.

"(T)he isoflavones in soy products may reduce the risk of heart disease, osteoporosis, and several types of cancer. Certain flavonoids in blueberries may actually reverse nerve cell aging. And a wide array of compounds in fruits and vegetables may protect cell components against oxidative damage as well as vitamins C or E.

Indeed, cancer, heart disease, and Alzheimer's disease may plague the middle-aged and elderly because of our limited knowledge of phytonutrients. Research in this arena, now less than two decades old, may relegate some of today's ills to the history books—joining scurvy and pellagra."

Reading the above, one thinks:  Well, it’s a start.  The rule of thumb is, if a mainstream or conservative organization is saying it MAY do good; assume it does.  (There’s very little profit to be garnered from researching non-drug "nutraceuticals", as foods that heal, or prevent disease, are sometimes called.  Ergo, there is bound to be little publicity or research.)

WHY SUPPLEMENTS ARE CRUCIAL:

Our water and air are so polluted, as opposed to our grandparents’ time, that we cannot possibly meet all our requirements without supplementation.  Our soil is especially depleted in minerals, due to the fact that modern agriculture has divested the land of nutrition.

Minerals aren’t readily available in foods; it must absorb them via the soil.  Years ago, time-tested and natural agricultural practices like natural decay, when it wasn't interfered with, benefited the soil.  Today,  modern farming practices, like only farming one crop over and over, strip the soil.

ANTIOXIDANTS

Free radicals are everywhere. They’re groups of atoms that oxidize, or damage the cells, causing infection and inflammation, the leading cause of illness.  Many scientists who study the aging process believe antioxidants cause aging.  It makes sense:  If our cells can’t go about the job of renewing themselves or deflecting the thousands of assaults they get hit with, day in and day out, irreparable damage, like wrinkling of the skin and general malaise associated with aging, will result.

Free radicals are also caused by excess exposure to the sun, or even exercise.  Which is why we should compensate by taking antioxidants.

Antioxidants are scavengers that feast on the bad guys, and they’re in Vitamin A, beta-carotene, vitamins C and E, Coenzyme Q-10, and the mineral Selenium.  Melatonin--that hormone we produce in sleep--is another powerful antioxidant.

WHAT WE NEED: BOTTOM LINE:

Bottom line:  Give yourself all the health-saving benefits you can by eating fresh (versus canned) fruits and vegetables (frozen, when you can't eat fresh); organic, when you can; and taking in lightly steamed grains and legumes. Finally, do take in the life-saving supplements, on a daily basis. They fill the nutritional gap in our air, water and soil.

Keep in mind that a nutritional deficiency may not affect your entire body, but only certain cells.  For instance, if you smoke, you may have a Vitamin C deficiency in the lung area.  Your body will apply the vitamin exactly where it needs to.

NUTRIENTS AND DOSAGES:

Here are the dosages of Vitamins and Minerals, including antioxidants, that you should take:  (These dosages are for adults and children over 100 pounds.)  As always, consult with your health care provider about these additions to your diet.

Optional Supplements
(But Important)

Coenzyme Q-10 - 50 mg.  (A superstar; an "extra" antioxidant. Also called Ubiquinone, it’s found in every cell of the body.  As we age, the amount recedes in cells.  It plays a critical role in the production of energy, stimulates the immune system, fights periodontal disease, counters histamine, among other ailments. Oil soluble; best absorbed when taken with fatty foods.)

Garlic -  As directed on label. (An immune booster and anti-bacterial. Also an anti-viral--a natural antiseptic--due to its high-sulfur content..)

L-Carnitine - 1,000-2,000 mg. (Take on an empty stomach.  Increases energy by aiding thermo genesis or "fat burning" as it transports fat to the mitochondria, or little "powerhouses" of the cells.)

*IMPORTANT:  Take iron only if a deficiency exists, as it is aging. Always take iron separately from other nutrients, as some supplements interfere with its absorption.

Miscellaneous Notes:

Clinical nutritionists claim that markedly positive changes in health can be seen, with proper vitamin protocol, within two weeks.  In over a year and a half to two years of healthful living and proper supplementation, heart-health guru Dr. Dean Ornish has claimed, diseases like heart disease can be ameliorated.

Vegetarians might want to keep in mind that some supplements are encased in gelatin, which is made from a commonly used protein colloid. It is made from hooves, skin and connective tissue of dead animals (mostly cows). Otherwise, gelatin--you’ve eaten it if you’ve ever had Jello--contains chondroitin sulphate--which supports bones, cartilages, nails, ligaments, tendons and connective tissue.

Insulin resistance usually causes the flabby paunch around the tummy for both males and females.  There are supplements that lower blood sugar levels, which coincides with improved appearance. Some of these are:  chromium picolinate - 200 - 800 mcg., lecithin - as directed; and glutamine 2-4 grams.

The Noble Affair©

A Short Story
By Eva R. Marienchild

John Leary, of the NYPD Detective Squad, 13th Precinct, had been assigned the Noble Affair three years, five weeks and two days ago--a relatively short time for an unsolved case of this complexity--but already it grated on him as if it were one of the cases he'd filed away in the unsolved "Morgue" file.
He directed towards the case the pent-up frustration behind his fifteen years on the force. The things he knew about the Noble Affair underscored what, lately, bothered him most about people.
For some time now, he'd been noticing that relatively few folks had bouts with their conscience. This gnawing disgust with the way people lived their lives--himself, included--had reached a peak.
He wasn't thinking that about the criminals he'd brought in, whose consciences he believed had gone quiet a long time ago. No. These were  normal, everyday folks, like the checkout gal at the bakery shop whom, he suspected, tacked on fifty cents here and there to the purchases of regulars, then pocketed the change.
John had caught the cashier stiffing a little old lady. He’d been standing in line right behind her. Not wanting to cause a scene, he leaned over the counter and kept his voice as low as possible: "I don’t like what you’re doing here, Jill."
At first, the cashier had looked surprised to be caught. Then she flipped him a cold look. "Get over it, John," she said, slamming the cash register drawer shut so hard that everyone in line jumped. She smacked her gum and blew a bubble, daring John. Of course, John had known her since she was a teenager, working the after-school shift.
John popped Jill's gum with an outstretched index finger, causing her to squeal. She had to peel it off her nose. He heard the customers behind him tsk-tsk.
"Not nice," said another cashier, standing up for Jill.
"The stories I could tell you about ‘not-nice’ would make your hair curl", John snapped.  It sounded, to his own ears, as if he were a complete stranger speaking, and he was taken aback. Since when was he this churlish? But he didn't stop.  "And, frankly," he said, "I’m tired of seeing ‘not-nice’ in my own backyard."
John followed the old lady outside and offered her a buck. "Miss, I believe you dropped this," he said. The white-haired matron looked surprised, but pocketed the dollar, a bit sheepishly.

John started attending Sunday Mass at the little Reformed church on 109th Street, to learn how to pray, he told himself. He sat in the empty last pew. At one point, he felt someone tapping him on the shoulder.

"What?" he shouted, turning quickly. The startled woman in the pew behind him had been offering her hand during the "Kiss of Peace", when congregants greeted each other. "Oh, right," said John. By now, the woman had placed her hand on her own neck, as if protecting it from him.

"Peace be very much with you," John said, smiling.

When John went into Queens to catch a baseball game, he watched the subway riders close their eyes and pretend to be asleep as an amputee with military stripes pinned to his soiled t-shirt rolled into the car, carrying a Styrofoam cup. John reached into his pocket and took out a five dollar bill.  When the amputee shuffled past him, he stuffed it in the man's shirt pocket.  The man's eyes flashed in appreciation but he only nodded.

Now, reporting for work, John Leary parked his battered old Buick on the city street. He sidestepped a speeding bike messenger, and headed South on 78th Street. He walked into the Station House.
"Sarge, is it just me?" John asked the forlorn human fixture who looked down at him from the badly chipped wooden desk. "Or do people just not give a rat's you-know-what, anymore, about doing right? I mean, they don`t have any--what's the word?--integrity."
John had been reprimanded for using profanity, so now he said "rat's you-know-what", instead. He said "rat's-you-know-what", a lot.
Sarge raised his wiry eyebrows at John, but otherwise his craggy features were expressionless. "How long have you felt like this?"
John looked down at his hands. "I been going to church, Sarge. I've been thinking: there's gotta be more to life than just doing a job and -- well, you know. The other stuff." He had been about to say: "and getting lucky", which is what he would have told his partner in the patrol car, in the old days. But that was before he’d decided to clean up his act.
Sarge shook his head and put down his paper. "Nobody has backbone anymore. That was in my day. Let me give you some advice, Leary. If you want to live to see your pension, stop thinking about things that'll just keep you going around in circles."
John headed for the back, where his small office was. Maybe Sarge was right. Maybe he should quit trying to figure things out--if only to keep from having the kind of meltdown Manhattan specialized in dishing out.
Besides, he argued, there were some do-gooders around. Joe Kingsley, for instance; his old barrister pal with a private practice in the next office building. The one with the message "Building a More Just Universe - One Lawsuit At a Time" on his law office stationery. Ol' Joe wasn't exactly a barracuda in court, but his research and reasoning was  bullet-proof, so he didn’t  have to be.
John flicked on the light switch to his office, feeling a little better. He reached into his jacket pocket for the box of chocolates he'd picked up at Perugina's.
John had picked it up as a thank you to his hard-toiling 57-year old secretary. The owner of the shop, a black guy, had told John: "You know about the kick-backs we store owners have to pay to get business in fancy hotels, don't you?  All those chocolates that show up on people's pillows don't just get placed there by the tooth fairy."
John had had no idea. After all these years on the force, he was surprised there was anything left to feel disillusioned about.
Yesterday, John had answered his desk phone to hear his new landlord's voice on the other end. Real day-topper it was. How the tenement owner had managed to not appear on The Village Voice's "Worst Landlords of The Decade" List, John didn't know.
"The contract you signed is good, John--don`t get me wrong. But the bums that sold me the building neglected to tell me I gotta put family in there, or else the stove and fridge shouldn't be in your unit".
"So disconnect the stove and the fridge, and reduce my rent. I don't eat there, anyway."
And now, now the Noble Affair awaited him.
John sighed and went over to the File Cabinet to retrieve the folder.
He flung the folder onto his desk and eased into his swivel chair.
He felt a headache coming on.
Somebody was threatening to firebomb the venerated Pets Rights Association on 8th and 7th.
He still couldn't square it: some person or group had a thing against the organization that fought for the rights of cuddly animals. What was the world coming to?  John felt the familiar bitterness start to kick in.
Investigations had determined that the chic Noble Shoppe on 57th was where the notepaper had been purchased for the follow-up notes claiming responsibility. The name stuck.
The notes from the alleged perps all said the same thing: "We are your fur-wearing neighbors. We demand the right to wear fur".

John opened the folder and fanned out all the contents on top of his desk, the way he did when he worked on a case.
For the millionth time, he inspected the notes, the police reports, the coffee-stained listing of all known groups that had a problem with pets; his secretary had printed it out for him.
He grunted when he saw something that somehow had managed to elude his eagle eye, until now: The name CUR FURS.
Wasn't that the company his ex, Marcella, had written a story on?
Last month, she'd called, sounding enthusiastic.
"Hey, John."
"Hey, sweetheart."
"I've been assigned to cover the Fashion Show at the Met, and the three top CUR FURS models sent the Tribune a press release about how they plan to disrobe --just drop their furs. They’re still be wearing bathing suits underneath, of course.”"
"For what purpose?"
"To protest the threatened fire bombings at the Pet Rights place you’re investigating. They're painting FUR KILLS in blood red letters on their backs."
"The company knows, and isn’t putting a stop to it?"
"Maybe they like the publicity. John, you gotta give me some data on this case. I'd do anything for a scoop!" John felt a lurching in his gut, but he'd laughed.

Turning to his computer now,  John punched in the password that pulled up his phone directory. M-- Marcella Rubinstein, Tribune Reporter.
He knew he should have known her number by heart. But he’d convinced himself he was bad with numbers. On the third ring she answered. "News Desk".

"Marcy, hey. How's it goin`?"
"John! Long time no hear."
"Only a few weeks.. I'll buy you lunch."
When she ambled into the Empire Diner, he was waiting for her. She wore her signature black-on-black. Black denims that showed off her shapely thighs. Black clingy long-sleeved V. When she got closer, he saw she had on a dragonfly pin. Had he given her that? Yeah, he had. Maybe she was still sweet on him.
He felt one side of his mouth curve upwards in a lopsided, world weary grin. She slid into the booth opposite him.
"So what's it gonna be, hon?" he asked.
"Hey. It's been a couple of weeks, not a couple of years. Same thing I always order."
She was right.  They were no loner married, but they did eat lunch fairly frequently together.

"Sorry. I get you mixed up with my other ex."

He was kidding and they both knew it.  There was no other ex.  There was no other anyone in his life, as far as he was concerned. It hadn’t been his choice to divorce.

Marcy grinned, a lopsided grin, like his; only hers was the left side. He had to think for a minute to remember why they'd broken up, but it resurfaced, like an imbedded sliver of glass he`d forgot. She'd lied to him about a man she'd been seeing. He thought a trial separation would be good for them, but she’d filed  papers.

John dismissed the memory and focused on the case. "The only motive I can come up with,” he said, “is the anti-fur picketers in front of Bloomies and Saks. Is that reason enough to threaten to firebomb a building?"
Marcy looked at him sympathetically. "You're no closer to finding who it is?" John saw she was wearing a fierce crimson lipstick. She reached into her shoulder bag and pulled out a sheath of papers. She slid the stack of paper-clipped files across the table to him. "I don't want this case giving us both agita, John. Here. This is some of the stuff I dug up. Could be of help. Don't worry; they`re just copies". She fished further in her bag. "Oh," she said nonchalantly, "and here's my story so far." Marcella pushed the laser printed pages, double spaced, over to him.
John looked at what she'd laid out. "You're giving me this, officially? Your research and your story? Did you turn it in?" He was distracted by the dragonfly pin. Its diamond encrusted broach twinkled under the cheap fluorescent lighting.

After lunch, they hugged. Marcy kissed his cheek.  He lingered a bit longer than usual. She looked happy. She looked good. John groped in his breast pocket for a tissue to wipe off her lipstick and wondered if she was still seeing that boyfriend.
When John got back to the office he poured over Marcella's article.
Then he leafed through the paperwork he'd fanned out on his desktop.
Half an hour later, he looked her up again on the computer screen. He dialed.
"Marce. It's me."
She was crying. "Your timing's great. I messed up."
"What's happening?"
He heard a pause, and then the sound of her bawling.
"If you don't tell me, I can't help."
She breathed in tremulously. "I just got canned. I lied. I lied through my teeth."
"You lied? What about?" He knew, 'though. Just like that, he knew.
Red lights went off in his head. This could mean her career. He surprised himself; he didn't ask the details.
"I'll be right over."
John drove downtown. He parked by the Seamen’s Institute. The East River near the South Street Seaport was churning, the white caplets a ceaseless agitation. He looked at the waves for a few seconds before jogging the short distance to the stately old Tribune building.
At the News Desk, everybody seemed to have their heads bent over their work. Even the phones were silent.
All of Marcella's office stuff fit into a cardboard box. The velveteen rabbit he'd given her on Valentine's Day, three years ago, stuck out of the open carton when he carried it to the Buick and placed it on the back seat.
After the box was in, John slammed the car door and looked over at Marcella. She stood leaning against the passenger's side, clutching her huge reporter's bag. Tears were streaming down her face. After a few minutes, she wiped her eyes. John went over to her and took her hand in his. Together they looked out over the water; its surface rippled under the afternoon sun..
"Ready?" he said, after a while, massaging her fingers.
She nodded.
They went back to his place. The landlord hadn't disconnected the fridge or stove yet.
"Want some food? Anything?" He looked in his empty refrigerator. "We can order in."
She shook her head.
They talked about nothing, about everything, avoiding the issue, until she was ready.
Finally, she said:"I wanted something; something I wasn't getting, John."
"Yeah, well. That's obvious. What? Approval? Attention? A paycheck?"
"All of the above. I couldn't get an exclusive for weeks." She laughed ruefully. "I was afraid I’d get fired." She choked back a sob.  He hugged her and stroked her hair. "I figured it out a few minutes before I called. When I got back to the office, I read your story. You just wrote down everything I'd told you about the case. Sweetheart, I told you premises, theory. Before anything had been verified."
She put her hands over her face.
"What's so bad is they printed it. The paper's credibility is on the line. You knew, huh?"
He nodded.
"But you wouldn't have said."
"Nah."

He took a deep breath.  “I’ll help you clear your name.  You’ll write some sort of letter retracting everything, right?”

She nodded.

That last time they'd been together they'd been lying on his bed, their heads on the same pillow. They'd been married then. He'd hold her his half-baked theories on the case. He strained to think back: When had that been? Two years ago. Two whole years.

She sniffled. "You don't hate me."
He smiled his lopsided grin. "I don't hate you."
"I needed a story." For a minute, she looked righteous. "Don’t you judge me!"
He shrugged. "Judging is an ugly business." He looked into her bright brown eyes, and further down, at the dragonfly pin that twinkled. "You always wear that?"
"Always."
He believed. Whether she was telling the truth, or not.
John--" she said.
"Shhh," he said, "The whole world's gone topsy turvy." Not him, `though. He was going to play this straight. He knew that as surely as he knew that the lightness he was feeling in the middle of his chest hadn't been there this morning.
He placed his big thumbs on Marcie's jaw, moving them lightly, rhythmically, on her smooth skin.
John bent down to brush her salty, tear-stained mouth gently with his.
He still needed her, he realized. "You know, Marce, I think I'm gonna live to see my pension."
She looked at him, not understanding.
He shook his head. "Not important."
The word for it came easily to him: integrity.
He loved Marcy. She needed him; he would help her get back her good name; straighten things out with the newspaper; tell the truth, make it a win-win scenario. Wasn't that what it was supposed to be about? You had to live in the world, but you could do it righteously.
The priest's droning delivery from the pulpit, last Sunday --"These are our marching orders: Those were Our Lord’s  requirements. Therefore should you love one another, even as I have loved you,"--hadn't marred the impact the words had had on him.
Maybe, John thought, feeling giddy, whatever he had was catching, and Marcella would come down with a case of it.
Who knew? They might start a trend.
John stood up suddenly. "Let’s go get some vegetarian pizza from that four-star health food place down the block. And don’t worry about your job. I’ll have the Sarge talk to your Editor. You were personally involved with me; you were in the loop, but in a mixed-up way. You made a mistake. Look, you’re a good reporter. In your over-eagerness, you let your imagination run wild with you. The paper can print your retraction and apology."
He looked at her, and saw the relief sink into her features. "How’s that sound? Hey, as far as I’m concerned, that’s the truth. But, sweetheart, from now on, you gotta understand something."
She looked at him, nodding already. "Go on. Get it over with."
"OK. Ready? Here it is: The truth will win you points anywhere you go. Ever hear of Mark Twain? This is what he said, once: "Always do right. It will gratify some people, and astonish the rest." How’s that as a motto for us do-gooders, huh?"
Marcy smiled, her eyes twinkling. "So you’re turning into a do-gooder?"
"I guess you could say I’m upscaling" he said. "Care to join the club?"
She got up, languidly, and threw her arms around his neck. "Is there a membership fee?"
"It’s open to the public. But there are some VIP benefits that’ll cost you. For starters, I’d like the pleasure of your company. Sort of a quid pro quo, you know?"
"I know." She wasn’t sniffling anymore. "John, for your information, I’m not seeing Cameron anymore." She looked down. “For your information, we were never intimate.”
"Who? Oh, him.  Really? Well, that’s good news."
"It is, huh?"
"What happened?"
"Let’s just say he couldn’t hold a candle to you."
"Hmm."

She looked down.  "I'm sorry.  I know words are cheap.  I'll show you I've changed...that you can trust me.  I...I'd like you to take me to church with you. OK?"

He sighed. "OK."
They put their arms around each other, and sashayed out the door.

When they got back an hour later, John and Marcy still had their arms around each other, and they were laughing.

John had long ago filed the Noble case in a corner of his brain marked:“Who Cares?". The answering machine light was blinking.

“Leave it,” said Marcy.

“It might be good news.”

Sarge’s staccato, mournful voice filled the room. “Leary, they found the Nobel culprits. An inside job. A manager at CURS FURS was caught mailing a suspicious looking package.”

“I wonder if your “phony” story elevated the level of suspicion,” John said, looking at Marcy.
“I don’t know.”

They stood in the cramped living room looking at each other. John held Marcy’s two hands in his.
"Are you up for a little company?" she asked, shyly.
He nodded and she went willingly to him. He reached down and nuzzled her neck.

"You were saying?"
"Hmm. That feels nice. I wasn’t saying anything."
"Tell me how you’re going to try to wriggle some more secrets out of me."
She wrinkled her nose. "Guess I’ll have to start by marrying you again."
He tsk-tsked. "I wouldn’t inflict that upon you."
She laughed. "I can think of worse."
"I don’t want you thinking of worse. I want you thinking of the best…"
Marcy giggled in his arms and he knelt, with her, on the couch. "You are hereby made a VIP member of the do-gooders’ club," John said. "Will you marry me?"
Marcy lay down on the coach and, pulling John by his tie, drew him towards her.
"Yes!” she said, breathlessly. She threw her arms around John, and he planted kisses on her face, her chin, her nose, her mouth. Pulling away, she smiled: “This is where I start showing you what a do-gooder I am, husband-to-be.”
They were near a window. Outside, down at street level, John could hear the traffic picking up. Drivers were yelling at each other in a myriad of dialects he wasn't familiar with. Occasionally, accented English wafted into the room. John smiled faintly.

"New York," he said.

"Yeah," she said. Then she suddenly looked serious. “You know, we could be anywhere!”

This, he thought, this cause that he was about to champion, it couldn’t have felt more right.
